Golf at Castelconturbia Golf Club
This splendid golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., is considered one of the most beautiful in all of Europe. A golf course was first designed here in 1898 covering the same area where the modern holes are today. The spot is ideal, set among age-old trees, streams, and ponds, and the terrain is slightly undulating with many small lakes. The course blends magnificently with the unspoiled rural countryside, with Monte Rosa as a backdrop. Castelconturbia has hosted the Italian Open; a testament that the course offers golfers a competitive environment.
Golf at the Bogogno Golf Club
Opened in 1996, Bogogno quickly established itself as one of the top courses in Italy. Designed by the American Robert von Hagge, Bogogno stretches over two championship 18 hole, par 72 courses – the Bonoro and del Conte. Set against a backdrop of the Alps and Monte Rosa, Bonoro is a great parkland course winding through natural forests, and del Conte course has a Scottish-links feel to it.
Transfer from Stresa to Como, and Golf at the Villa d’Este Golf Club
Short transfer from Stresa to Como. The Villa d'Este Golf Club lies beyond the wonderful lake of Montorfano in a splendid setting in sunny Brianza. The course is situated at a height of 1200 feet in what is best described as the Italian equivalent of a Scottish landscape. The course was designed in 1926 by Peter Gannon and the 18 holes wind their way through chestnut groves, birch and pine trees. There are flowing fairways, greens full of small berms and a distinctly alpine flavor. The back nine is particularly challenging, with drives through chutes of trees. The course is rather hilly but easily walkable. There are only two par fives but both offer a real chance of a birdie. A superb clubhouse, with views of the course and the lake, adds the final touch to this tranquil and elegant site.
Golf at La Pinetina Golf Club
Founded in 1971, La Pinetina Golf Club is situated in Brianza. It covers 158 acres of Tradate-Appiano Gentile parkland in wonderful Italian countryside. In 1982 the entire complex was purchased by the club members and considerable structural and technical modernization was carried out to bring the course to perfection: bunkers were extended, greens re-laid, etc. Today, La Pinetina is a top-level championship course. The hilly, pine tree lined terrain makes this a tiring course to walk (golf cart recommended); on the plus side - the magnificent vistas.
Golf at Menaggio
In 1907 a certain Mr. Wyatt, son and heir of a wealthy British subject, visited the hills above Grandola and Uniti. He fell in love with Italy and soon after settled there with his wife. He organized a makeshift 9-hole course which soon became a favorite meeting place for golf-lovers in the area. In the 1950s the Golf Club was handed over to Italians. Antonio Roncoroni deserves special praise for the considerable improvements made to the course, without damaging its typically British tradition and style. On the fifth hole, which runs out to the mountains that tower over the greens, players look down on the terracotta rooftops of the little village of Croso and back out to Lake Como. Mention should be made of the golf library at Menaggio, second only to that at St. Andrews.
Golf at Carimate Golf Club
Carimate Golf Club, opened in 1962, is in the foothills of Branza, between Lake Como and Milan. It is one of the most attractive and pleasant clubs in the Lombardy region. The course features naturally undulating fairways and greens that wind through botanical gardens. Carimate is naturally wavy, surrounded by a great variety of very ancient and valuable trees. Every hole is named for the tree that characterizes it. The Clubhouse, overlooking the course, has an award winning restaurant.
