Umbria is so extraordinary that it is entirely reasonable to view it as neighbor Tuscany's equal. When we ponder the spiritual/artistic output of this lofty region-considering the likes of St. Francis and the great Perugino-we are utterly dumbfounded. When touring Umbria, popularly dubbed the green heart of Italy, where can we find better produce that almost single-handedly creates Umbria's world-famous gastronomy? Which region is more evocative of Italy's pre-Roman glory than Umbria, where cities founded by the great Etruscan civilization still endure nearly 3,000 years later? And the Umbrian countryside, finally, is as awe-inspiring as anything in the world.

In Umbria there exists a plethora of things to do and see, but each one begs that you adopt the calm, contemplative spirit that daubs its landscape. As you will see, this is hardly an imposition; instead, Umbria takes you by the hand and shows you the ways in which her wonders are best enjoyed. Perhaps the best way to simultaneously acclimate yourself and begin to experience Umbria's magnificence is through a relaxing drive across its undulating hills spotted with farms and vineyards, and stopping off occasionally to visit whichever attractions strike your fancy. Somewhere in your journey you are bound to run into the dome-shaped tombs that make up the Etruscan necropolis. Walking through these "cities of the dead" make for an uncanny experience found nowhere else in the world outside of neighboring Lazio, which is sure to leave your mind in a state of peaceful contemplation. As we continue on our road-trip we pass through the famous wine region of Orvieto for an exquisite lunch and a couple of glasses of its delicious white wine, which takes us to Assisi. If you've yet to be seduced by Umbria's natural splendor, Assisi will do so in dramatic fashion; and bear in mind that you won't be the first to have been prey to its charms: Saint Francis of Assisi had his divine revelation through this city's richly beautiful and abundant nature... Eventually, after a few hours, days, or weeks, we continue our exploration of the rest of Umbria's enthralling countryside until we come upon the great Etruscan city of Perugia. After a thorough examination of its hilly, quaint streets, we settle down at a traditional restaurant, order a nice bottle of local Montefalco Sagrantino and salute Umbria for having opened our eyes to her many delights!
