When considering the wealth contained within Sicily, you will find that it is easily one of Italy's most culturally rich regions. Here, Ancient Greek and Roman ruins exist side by side. And the spiritually inclined traveler cannot only see a host of amazing churches but can also visit Mount Etna-the site where for over a thousand years Purgatory was believed to have been! Add to these contemplative treasures the region's superlative beaches, cuisine, and wine, and the beautiful Sicilian people who personify southern Italian passion and beauty, and you will realize that every inch of this land is very much worth exploring!
If you never even step foot on the Italian peninsula, the Island of Sicily will still have the power to entertain you in the most exquisite fashion for at least several lifetimes! No matter where you decide to visit in Sicily, your senses will be absolutely inundated with things to do, see, eat, and drink. So, bearing this in mind, what is the best way to experience Sicily, especially if it is your first time? A very good idea is always to begin with what is most popular, including Palermo, Taormina, and Syracuse. Palermo is as compelling a city as any in Italy which showcases Sicilian culture on "the grand stage," from its famous food markets to one of Italy's finest opera houses. Next to Taormina, where you'll experience Sicily's most famous resort town that is one of Europe's most secluded and beautiful destinations. Then on to the Ancient Greek City of Syracuse, which is as charming as it gets, and is still bewitched by its Old-World essence. But, besides this itinerary, equally delightful and practical Sicilian vacations abound, such as traveling through its world-renowned wine country, exploring the expansive Mount Etna, and/or renting a villa on one of the island's marvelous beaches. The choices are endless and we would be surprised if your first trip to Sicily didn't lead to several future visits; but before you go, bear one final thing in mind: eating as much of Sicily's great food as you can is the secret ingredient to any memorable vacation on this wondrous island!
