At its nucleus, Ravello is like the other spectacular resort towns that cover the Italian coastline: a place to relax and enjoy scenic beauty and great cuisine. Ravello's distinctiveness, however, lies in its role as having been the home to a veritable cornucopia of artistic geniuses. The result is that we, the vacationers, have a host of activities that let us capture all of Ravello's brilliance. An artistic tour of Ravello begins with a visit to its Duomo, which, along with having an impressive façade, holds one of southern Italy's most celebrated Christian mosaics depicting the Old Testament's Jonah and the Whale. Then we move onto the Villa Cimbrone where we can immerse ourselves both in one of the Amalfi Coast's most lovely gardens and the history that gave rise to some of the world's finest works of literature. Other than the mansion proper, be sure to take the time to explore the estate grounds including its flora and the ancient cloisters and chapels. Now it is time to meander to the Villa Rufolo, the picturesque estate whose gardens inspired the creative faculties of both Boccaccio in his famous Decameron and Richard Wagner in his Parsifal. The gardens of the Villa Rufolo - which offer a panorama of incomparable beauty - have the pleasure of hosting the annual Ravello Music Festival, which formerly put an emphasis on Wagner, but which today highlights music from a variety of eras and styles. Seeing a performance in Ravello is truly a special event, with the orchestra placed so that the ocean is the backdrop; but once you've had your fill of the sites, look inwardly and use Ravello's many charms to stimulate the pulse of your own desires and set your own creativity to work!
