Like all Italians, Milan natives enjoy creamy cappuccinos, Puccini operas, and exquisite wines; but often Milan's work-heavy lifestyle forces its people to put industriousness first and leisure second. But for us as vacationers this is actually a plus, because we get to enjoy the fruits of their labor! The most obvious of these is high fashion, which is always the most cutting-edge on the globe and is sold at prices that you will find very pleasing. Just as important, Milan is blessed with fine art and architecture, both because its artists have contributed a fair amount to Italy's cultural heritage and because Milan's wealthy residents historically have made a habit of purchasing Europe's finest art!

Before we begin our Milan vacation, let's dress the part. Head over to the fashion emporiums on Via Monteapoleone and Corso Vittorio Emanuele and garb yourself in something, if not flashy, then understatedly elegant. Now that we have harmonized our essences with the Milanese spirit, it is time to explore the exquisite flavors of its regional gastronomy paired with the tasty wines coming from both Lombardy and Piedmont; and bear in mind that if you love great cheese and risotto dishes you might actually shed a tear during your dining session! Having inspired our palates, there can be little question what our next activity is: Milan's world famous Gothic cathedral. Its exterior alone is worth the visit, as no single structure in Europe-including Paris' Notre Dame-so perfectly and exquisitely conveys the virtues of the gothic style, with sharp yet silken steeples garnished with lacy flying buttresses. Before entering the cathedral proper, pay a brief visit to the adjoining Baptistery both for its impressive design and because it is widely believed to be the site where Church Patriarch St. Ambrose baptized fellow Patriarch St. Augustine (recognized by history enthusiasts as a monumental occurrence!). The art in the cathedral is best appreciated with a spirit of contemplation-not necessarily religious, but aesthetic. The two pieces that will make a revelatory impression on your spirit are Mantegna's Foreshortened Christ and, yes, da Vinci's Last Supper!
