For die-hard romantics, what can be a more fitting travel destination than Verona, home of Romeo and Juliet? Any trip to Verona must begin with a visit to the hallowed spot that inspired Shakespeare's masterpiece-the balcony that was the scene of Romeo's reflection, "What light through yonder window breaks?" Next it is on to Verona's ancient side, the famed Arena-Verona's Colosseum, which is one of Italy's best stages for opera during the summer-and the numerous other ruins that are surpassed in quantity only by Rome. Finally, our palates are primed for some exquisite Veronese fare, a culinary tradition that is rendered truly sublime when paired with delicate sips of the glorious nectar produced in nearby Valpolicella!

There is no question that Verona is a city of romance; yet to esteem its great worth you don't necessarily have to come with your inamorato/a. No matter your companion, Verona is an absolute delight, especially when explored on foot, passing its multitude of Roman ruins and its alleys, traversing its expansive piazzas, and perusing its shops with, of course, frequent food and wine breaks! If you're even thinking of neglecting a visit to the statue of Juliet in order to avoid large crowds, think again! Because really-when in Verona, how could you not visit this site hallowed by Romantics around the world? Here, two bizarre practices occur. First, visiting couples inscribe their initials in a heart in the site's portico; second, you can have your picture taken beside the bronze Juliet while you brush her breast for good (romantic) luck. Having paid homage to Shakespeare, we now do likewise to the opera gods and see a performance at the famous Verona Arena. Its opera company is top-notch to say the least; but how could you turn down the opportunity to witness a soprano's aria in an Ancient Roman coliseum under the stars? By the way, music enthusiasts should bear in mind that the Arena hosts all sorts of musical performances, from classical to rock. Lastly, an integral part of any Verona experience is a day trip, or few nights' excursion, to the nearby Valpolicella, one of Italy's best wine regions noted for its Amarone. Not only are its vineyards a treat to taste at, but many also offer up a memorable dining experience. Between bites and sips pause, sit back, and take in your picturesque surroundings, and enchant your senses!
