If you can't remember the last time you fell asleep on the beach, or when you last brought a novel to a café for a day's worth of reading and relaxing, you might want to consider a vacation to the Italian Riviera. This narrow strip of Liguria is among Italy's most scenic and elegant destinations, one that puts an emphasis on relaxing. But when you need a break from tanning yourself, or in between exquisite meals, go explore the churches and monuments that bear testimony to Liguria's fascinating history. And if you are a fashion guru, you'll find the shopping boutiques populating each coastal village as good as Milan or Paris!

One day, many years ago, some discerning person traveled the coastline extending from Marseilles, France, to La Spezia, Italy, and realized it was one of the most marvelous pieces of land imaginable. From this point forward people must have flocked to the Riviera to see if its sea was truly the brightest and clearest in the world, its views from its dramatic coastline the loveliest, and its seafood-based cuisine the most delightful. Needless to say, few who have ever visited this blissful land have ever left unsatisfied by its charms; and, with due respect to the French half of the Riviera (which is a compelling destination in its own right), the Italian Riviera is the epitome of paradise! A fun idea is to begin at La Spezia and travel the Italian Riviera's length (a beautiful journey by car and train), stopping whenever you find a city or town of interest. Feast on basil pesto and walk the Golden Street of Genova, spend an elegant night gambling and cocktail sipping in San Remo (don't forget about its music scene, too!), and spend a day lounging on the beach and exploring quaint towns like Bordighera. When you get to Ventimiglia-the last town before France-check out its botantical gardens. If you want to cross the border to go into Monaco or explore the French Riviera, great-but get back to Italy fast, lest you betray her!
