Those familiar with Italy will sense that a noticeably different air permeates Palermo, one suggestive of being in an entirely different country. Ask a native whether he/she is Italian or Sicilian and hear the sweet sound of "Io sono siciliano/a!" tickle your ears! As you walk the Palermo streets, the city's distinctiveness will reveal itself to you, whether you are passing Arab or Norman architecture, traversing its famed food/spice market, or just observing the rituals and mannerisms of each native. But if you want to immerse yourself in the delicious culinary culture of Palermo, try each of this city's famous if unusual dishes and your palate will be more than pleased that you decided to visit this historic city!

Life in Palermo, arguably Sicily's greatest metropolis, is so laid back it makes life on the mainland look hectic! Not surprisingly, visitors are encouraged to arrive in Palermo ready to appreciate its culture in the most relaxed manner possible. Depending on when you arrive, take the time to acclimate yourself with an espresso, tea, or another invigorating beverage, and then, preferably with the help of the concierge, go enjoy a nice meal with a few glasses of wine. At this point you may want to be like the locals and take a relaxing siesta, or, as the Italians call it, pausa. Now you are ready to hit the streets. Just walking through Palermo is a joy with its modern and ancient personas melding dramatically into one another at several points throughout the cityscape. Visiting churches and monasteries is particularly enthralling in Palermo because, owing to its Islamic heritage, many of its Catholic sites are converted mosques, which is readily apparent from their facades. Speaking of which, one of Palermo's more impressive museums is the Museum of Islam. Those keen to appreciate the arts will be very happy with the art galleries and museums and, of course, the very famous and beautiful Teatro Massimo opera house. To get an inside look at Palermo's Ancient Greek and Roman heritage, an engaging venue is the Regional Archeological Museum; and as you are trekking back to your hotel to freshen up for dinner, pass through Palermo's open-air specialty food market to get your palates in the mood for a great dinner alla siciliana!
