Close your eyes and imagine world-class skiing and hiking paired with Italy's patented charm and exquisite cuisine... No, this is not the Olive Garden in Vail, but Cortina d'Ampezzo. In no other place does Italy's relaxation and luxury so peacefully coexist with mountain sports as here, atop the jagged peaks of the Dolomites. But just because Hannibal's army of elephants was intimidated by these formidable slopes 2,000 years ago doesn't mean that novice skiers should be! Just beside Cortina's expert slopes are loads of very mild hills, so soft that they are ideal for learning the skiing basics!

One might argue that the faux chalets and ski shops that dot the mountains of America's best ski destinations are of a breathtaking beauty. One might even claim that nothing is lovelier than standing atop a mountain on the Appalachian Trail overlooking a rural American town. Perhaps unpatriotically, we must confess that the scenic charm of Cortina d'Ampezzo outdoes them all. Cortina is like something out of a Santa Claus fairy tale; once you see it, you'll feel the urge to pinch yourself to see if this magical place is only the fabrication of a bedtime dream. In the dead of winter when your day of skiing and winter sports is over, you nestle in to a cozy enoteca for a mug of piping hot and spicy mulled wine. Once you've warmed yourself up, Cortina's Teutonic vibe will make you desire some of its hearty fare that is both exceptionally tasty and comforting (and remarkably different from what we think of as Italian cuisine!). Spring and summer hiking is another fantastic way to get a taste of Cortina's world-class mountain sports. Be sure to stay in a regional hiking cabin called a refugio-a rustic but culturally rewarding way to enjoy the Dolomites-and be sure to look out for the fabled edelweiss flower!
