The Leaning Tower of Pisa is as much a cultural icon in America as Mickey Mouse, yet many know little to nothing about Pisa, one of Tuscany's greatest but most overlooked gems. Like all great cities in the region, Pisa is endowed with an impressive artistic heritage, rich history, and mouth-watering cuisine. But what is best about Pisa, especially for lovers of Tuscany, is that it is a refreshing, quaint, and decidedly different version of Tuscan culture, which itself is arguably Italy's most significant. So if you are touring Tuscany, be sure to drop by for at least a few nights, because often it is smaller cities like Pisa that enamor our spirits most powerfully!

Leaning Tower of PIsa

Pisa is like a playground for adults-that is, assuming the adults in question enjoy Italian food, wine, and culture paired with a host of historical wonders to appreciate and study. If it is your first time in Pisa you'll almost certainly want to visit the Leaning Tower and its accompanying treasures in the aptly named Campo dei Miracoli (field of Miracles). Buy the nicely priced combo ticket that includes a visit to each site in the piazza, and let the exploring begin! At the Leaning Tower, which was originally supposed to be the adjoining Duomo's bell tower, an interesting tradition persists of creating the optical illusion (almost always immortalized by a photograph) that one is pushing the tower to the ground. Admittedly this sounds strange but, like billions before you, you're almost fated to participate in the fun during your Pisa vacation! The other features of the Campo dei Miracoli, including the Duomo, Camposanto cemetery, and Baptistery, are truly special both for their designs and for the works of art that adorn their interiors. As you would expect, visiting these stunning sites will work up quite an appetite. A great option is to find a nice traditional restaurant in town to sample the local fare; but, on at least one occasion, you owe it to yourself to visit the Piazza Vettovaglie to purchase some fine Tuscan food products-breads, cured meats, cheeses, wines-and bring it all as a picnic to one of the lovely hilltops or fields that surround Pisa.
