About Lake Garda

It is the largest lake in Italy, located about half-way between Brescia and Verona it is part of the border between the Lombardy and Veneto regions. Lake Garda brings the gift of a last and unexpected breath of Mediterranean before reaching the passageways of the Dolomites heading north. Here, the intense blue of Lake Garda touches the mountains; the olive trees’ branches rustle with the wind, and the lemons mature in the sun. Along its enchanting shores there are several interesting towns, such as the ancient fortified town of Sirmione, whose picturesque Scaliger Castle dates from the 13th century. The Roman poet Catullus had a villa here. Culinary traditions combine the tastes of the Mediterranean cooking with the delicate tastes of lake, with an eye to the traditional mountain dishes. The mild climate favours a lush vegetation: the products of the earth are always abundant and tasty. Food is rich in fragrance, taste and unique ingredients all year round.

Highlights
Extra virgin olive oil - The numerous olive qualities like, Casaliva, Favarol, Raza, Rossanel, autochtony qualities, that together with other more popular qualities are cultivated on the terraces and slopes in this Mediterranean corner, producing oil of great quality, green-gold colored, a delicate fragrance with almond scents and a light and fruity taste. There is no other place in the world at this latitude where olive oil is produced: for this reasons it received the recognition D.O.P. of the European Community.

Freshwater fish - Once a nourishment reserve for the poor tables, today it nourishes delicate palates. The fresh-water fish cuisine is not only represented by the rare and fine large Carp, once the Prince of the well-off tables and banquets of Her Serene Highness. The Lake Trout, high esteemed friend of the large carp or the lake whitefish, enriches the local gastronomic offer. But also the less “noble” and all the extremely tasty fish like the Bleak, the Chub, the Tench, the Pike and the splendid, colorful Perch deserve a considerable place. The fresh-water fish is very good grilled or boiled, but also fried or roasted, stewed or baked in foil, in salt or steamed, carpaccio (thinly sliced raw fish with dressing) or soused; not to speak of the inviting fish soups or refined tartar.
