Learn to speak Italian?

The idea isn’t nearly as crazy as it sounds: yes, you can have conversational skills in Italian before you depart for your much-anticipated vacation. Even if you failed Spanish and French in high school, we know that with the smallest amount of effort you will be speaking l’italiano in no time! We’ve partnered with Mango Languages who offer a surprisingly fun and fresh approach to Italian language study. Thankfully there are no heavy books or boring teachers: just a straight forward website and mp3s you can put on your iPod.

What makes this language system so effective?

Each relevant expression is first given in English, and then in Italian; this is followed by a literal translation so that you understand the full meaning of each word.
Then the learned expression is given in Italian, which you are asked to translate into English, both colloquially and literally to demonstrate your knowledge.
All words/expressions are spoken to you with native accents so you know how to pronounce everything.

But when studying, keep your language goals in mind. If you want to discuss Dante’s use of terza rima with Florentine scholars, you will need to apply yourself significantly to the mastery of Italian. But if your goal is to know how to order food and wine, ask directions, thank people, and maybe even have the occasional light-hearted conversation with the locals, this will get you to where you want to be!
