The area is characterized by the presence of numerous urban axes, in particular the mos important of them are the metropolitan areas of Milan, Turin, Genoa, Venice and the urban region developed along the Via Aemilia, with at its center the city of Bologna.  North-West Italy includes the regions: Aosta Valley, Liguria, Lombardy and Piedmont. North-East Italy includes the regions: Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol and Veneto.
