From Piazza del Portello you can take the public elevator to go up the hill to Piazza Castelo or the funicular to go up to Chiesa Di Sant'Anna where a good walking path descends from the church.
The historic regatta, one of Italy's most exciting, is held the first weekend in June every fourth year. Boatmen from the ancient maritime republics of Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa, and Venice compete (the festival rotates amongst these cities).There is a jazz festival in July.
The statue "Christ of the Depths", underwater at the bay's entrance, is celebrated at the end of July with a Mass, the illumination of the reefs and a line of underwater torches to show the way to the statue.
Places to visit in Genoa:
- Piazza de Ferrari around which is sited the Opera and the Palace of the Doges. There is also a house where Christopher Columbus is said to have been born.
- Strada Nuova (now Via Garibaldi), in the old city, was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2006. This district was designed in the mid-16th century to accommodate Mannerist palaces of the city's most eminent families, including Palazzo Rosso (now a museum), Palazzo Bianco, Palazzo Grimaldi and Palazzo Reale. The famous art college, Musei di Strada Nuova and the Palazzo del Principe are also located on this street.
- St. Lawrence Cathedral, the Old Harbor (Porto Antico), transformed into a mall by architect Renzo Piano
- Cemetery of Staglieno, renowned for its monuments and statues. The Museo d'Arte Orientale as one of the largest collections of Oriental art in Europe.
- Genoa also has a large aquarium located in the old harbor. The port of Genoa also contains an ancient lighthouse , called the "Torre della Lanterna"
